Pioneer Newspapers implemented a competition to help their sales force produce high revenue numbers. The competition was based on the number of business listings sold in a direct head to head competition between the Pioneer Newpapers and on the rep to rep level. Over half of the papers hit their stretch goals and 2 sales reps hit 8 accounts on the week. They sold over 100 listings and made $88K in 5 days. Currently they have made over $350K in revenue and are figuring out how they can produce more.
Fetchtoto.com sold 52 accounts in 4 days and made aproximatley $63K in revenue. Within about 6 weeks from launch Fetchtoto sold over $100K in directory listings and is currently pushing the $200K mark. Fetchtoto does a great job building their listings and have been very creative with the look and feel of their directory. Also, they do a tremendous job of promoting their directory and they they are seeing a increase in the number of self service listing upgrades being purchased.
The Brentwood Press (www.thepress.net) hired two dedicated online sales reps specifically for their business directory. They were guaranteed a small base salary for the first couple of months and given the opportunity to sell to new customers within the market that were not currently advertising with the newspaper. The sales reps received training for a couple of days and ever since have been consistently selling several Gold and Platinum listings a day. They have currently sold between 40 to 50 accounts and generated about $50K in revenue for the Brentwood Press in around a month of selling.
